Sarah

I’m lucky to be asked to occasionally photograph members of the Houston academic community, and was fortunate to be able to photograph Sarah before she left town for her next adventure. Academia requires a certain seriousness, and it’s fun to balance those with more open/ accessible shots with smiles.

I really enjoy photojournalistic sessions, where I get to just photograph the normal aspects of everyday life. Most clients want to make the most of their sessions, with planned outfits and a fancy location, and I get that… but there’s real beauty in the daily routine, and it’s worth catching. I love doing these in black and white to cut down on the visual distractions, and it gives them a timeless feel.

Recent headshots

These are selected shots from a few fairly recent headshot sessions I’ve done. Clients usually walk away with 20-30 images and overwhelmingly tell me the session was super easy and very low pressure. I’ve loved expanding into headshots over the past few years: they’re a good balance for the fun, wild kid sessions!

I really love my clients- this family is big on authenticity, which really resonates with me. The kids are allowed to pick the clothes and activities. We get a few more “formal” group shots, and then I get to record them being kids. I’m consistently pleased with the shots, and I know they are, too.

I’ve known these adorable boys since they were newborns, and it always gives me great pleasure to see them again! We headed to Buffalo Bayou park and took some photos while they explored. I love my clients- particularly the ones who have continued to share their journey as parents with me!

I loved this session– I’d never spoken to the client (except via email) before the shoot, and she told me she was super uncomfortable with photos. It took us just a few minutes to really warm up and get things cracking. I think “photo-averse” clients are some of my favorites, because we generally end up pretty happy with the results, and I like being able to provide a really low-pressure environment for them.

The Shukers

At the very end of the “Christmas card season” last year, I received an inquiry for a family that was coming together from several continents. I was very excited to be there for such a meaningful reunion… Luckily for me, the gang was so hilarious that it was almost impossible to focus on the task at hand! They were so funny, and it was a great time.

It’s fairly rare that I take my own children out for “official” photos anymore- my house has enough natural light that I take shots here and there, without really sitting the kids down for anything like a “mini” session. Luckily, I had a minute this weekend to take them out and enjoy the bluebonnets, which aren’t as impressive as last year, but are looking beautiful just the same. Is there anything more gloriously Texan than bluebonnet photos? And although I wasn’t all made up and dressed to do so, I got in the picture too, and I’m super glad I did.

I’m in a fortunate position with my business: I don’t actively advertise, instead choosing to meet clients organically or via word of mouth from other clients. It results in a really cool group of people that I am always happy to run into and interact with. I get super attached to watching the kids grow up, too! I really enjoyed this particular session because we were at a new-to-me location, Buffalo Bayou Park. It was a beautiful fall day, made better by spending time with great clients!

Jasmine

When I shoot portraits in my studio, I generally ask clients to bring three outfits: a business one, a casual one, and a “normal workday” one. Of course, people are always welcome to bring whatever they need- some clients even use their headshots for things like dating profiles, personal websites, or just a social media refresh. I am very lucky to be able to photograph so many of my friends in my studio! I always have fun with Jasmine, who is one of my favorite friends and an absolute natural in front of a camera.

This job is special because people I normally wouldn’t get to see often pop back in to my life like clockwork once a year. They’ve moved on to other parts of town, other jobs, or have just been busy! I am so fortunate to be able to meet back up with them and catch up while we work. I love that part of this job, and I am always so happy to hear from old friends!

Every once in awhile, I am presented with a unique opportunity to document something new. When my friend Anna came into town, I planned to sit with her for a bit and watch her while she was tattooed by my favorite local tattoo artist, Johnny Beavers. He was open to me taking a few photos of the process, and I had such a great time. It was really amazing, and I’d love to do more tattoo documentation in the future, so if you’re planning on getting a new tattoo soon, contact me!

I love newborn sessions. They’re so laid back. Second (third, fourth) babies are always fun, too, because the older kids get to be involved as well! I like to time the sessions so older siblings are either just waking up from a nap or are coming home from school about an hour into the session. It gives us time to focus on the new baby and lets the older siblings feel like they are a part of the action, too.

I don’t often shoot weddings, especially as a primary shooter, but every once in awhile someone approaches me with a story that I can’t turn down. Such was the case for this beautiful wedding: it was tiny, with just the bride and groom’s immediate families present, in a location meaningful to the couple, and it included a ceremony that was intimate and sentimental. It was incredibly special to witness, and I feel very fortunate to have been a part of it. Congratulations!

New babies, new babies. Is there anything better?
Yes, one thing: New siblings of now-grown babies I’ve previously photographed! I love seeing how siblings look similar and different. And it’s always fun to see second timer parents who are able to relax a bit and enjoy the bumpy, hectic ride of having a new baby in the house.

I

Sweet little baby I was so sweet during her session- she slept almost the entire time, with just a brief little wakeup to eat. Her parents and brother are very lucky to have her! And, of course, if you have a dog, the dog’s going on my website. Not sorry!

I’ve photographed this family for a few years now. They often bring their parents and siblings along for a few photos, which I love. It’s so nice to have a record of your extended family, especially for the kids to see as they grow. In a rare move, I invited these clients into my house (something I generally only do for headshots!), and we had a fantastic session out of the heat.

Ford

Ford is the cutest -and busiest- two year old on the block! We met up at Fleming Park to take a few photos and play with cars! I really enjoyed following him around in “safari” mode- capturing his expressions and movements as he explored. So much fun (and a great workout!)
